Church Of England Lobby Group Pushes Bible Is Pro-Transgender Narrative

In recent years, some groups have attempted to reinterpret scripture through a progressive lens, claiming the Bible is pro-transgender. Central to these efforts is Changing Attitude England, a Church of England lobby group founded by retired Anglican priest Colin Coward.
This group advocates for what it describes as a "radical transformation of the patriarchal, heteronormative, white, western privileged culture of the Church of England." In practice, this means lobbying for the unconditional acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer identities within the Church.
Through their efforts, Changing Attitude England has lobbied bishops extensively during the Church's "Living in Love and Faith" consultations, aiming to push for sweeping changes in the Church's approach to sexuality and gender. The group's resources, hosted on the website LGBT Faith UK, assert that the Bible "affirms trans, intersex and queer people" by interpreting passages in ways that align with contemporary identity politics.
The campaign's guidance, authored by Ann Reddecliffe, makes bold claims, such as labeling eunuchs as "ancestors of trans people" and suggesting that Deborah's leadership role is an example of "queer" gender performance. They also believe their is evidence to suggest the woman at the well with Jesus was 'intersex'. These interpretations distort scripture to support an agenda, rather than seeking to understand the text's intended meaning.
God's Design in Creation
The Bible opens with a clear and unambiguous declaration of God's design for humanity: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27). This verse establishes the binary nature of gender as part of God's intentional creation. Male and female are not arbitrary social constructs but intrinsic aspects of human identity, grounded in God's creative will.
Jesus Himself reaffirmed this truth when addressing questions about marriage and human relationships: "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female?" (Matthew 19:4). Far from endorsing fluid or self-defined gender identities, Jesus rooted human identity in the unchanging design of God.
Addressing the Argument About Eunuchs
The argument that eunuchs in the Bible represent "ancestors of trans people" misunderstands both the historical and theological context. Eunuchs were individuals who, often due to cultural or coercive circumstances, were physically altered or lived celibate lives. They are not presented as examples of gender fluidity or as rejecting their God-given gender.
Isaiah 56:3-5 highlights God's inclusion of eunuchs in His covenant community, but this passage affirms spiritual acceptance, not a redefinition of gender. Similarly, in Acts 8, the Ethiopian eunuch's baptism demonstrates God's willingness to welcome all into His family through faith in Christ. It does not suggest that gender is malleable or irrelevant. Instead, it underscores the Gospel's power to transcend social and physical distinctions without altering God's design.
Misinterpreting the Samaritan Woman
Another troubling claim is the assertion that Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4 hints at her being "intersex." There is no biblical evidence to support this. The text focuses on her spiritual need and Jesus' gracious offer of living water, which symbolizes salvation. Suggesting she was intersex imposes a modern agenda onto the text, distorting its plain meaning.
Deborah and Gender Roles
The inclusion of Deborah, a female judge who led Israel, is cited as evidence of "queer characters" in the Bible. This reflects a misunderstanding of biblical gender roles and God's sovereignty. Deborah's leadership does not suggest she rejected her femininity or assumed a male identity. Instead, her story illustrates that God can use anyone to fulfill His purposes, regardless of societal norms.
Twisting Scripture to Fit Ideology
The efforts to reinterpret scripture to affirm transgenderism rely on eisegesis--reading into the text what is not there. This approach disregards the Bible's overarching narrative, which consistently affirms the binary nature of gender and God's intentional design. The claim that "queer characters" exist in the Bible reflects a desire to conform scripture to contemporary ideologies rather than submitting to its authority.
A Call to Uphold Biblical Truth
The Church is called to love and minister to all people, including those struggling with questions of identity. However, love does not mean affirming beliefs or behaviors that contradict God's Word. Instead, it involves pointing people to the transformative power of the Gospel, which restores and redeems every aspect of our lives, including our understanding of gender.
The Apostle Paul's words in Romans 12:2 are particularly relevant: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." As Christians, we must resist the pressure to conform to cultural trends and remain steadfast in our commitment to biblical truth.
The Bible is not a tool to justify modern ideologies but a timeless revelation of God's will. Attempts to twist its message to affirm transgenderism do a disservice to both scripture and those genuinely seeking God's truth. Let us uphold the integrity of God's Word and proclaim the hope and healing found in Jesus Christ.
