Transgender Men Are Disrupting Breastfeeding Groups With Chestfeeding Demands

For nearly seven decades, La Leche League International (LLLI) has been a haven for mothers seeking support in their breastfeeding journeys. Founded in 1956 by a small group of women, including 94-year-old Marian Tompson, the organization has long championed the beauty and biology of breastfeeding. However, recent policy changes designed to promote inclusivity have sparked controversy, leading Tompson and others to resign in protest.

The central issue? LLLI's new stance welcoming men who identify as women--and other individuals who take hormones to induce lactation--into its breastfeeding support spaces. The practice, often referred to as "chestfeeding," has drawn sharp criticism, not only from a biological and medical standpoint but also from a moral one, particularly among Christian conservatives.

A Fundamental Misunderstanding of Biology

Breastfeeding is not merely a sentimental or symbolic act; it is a biological function designed specifically for women. The process involves a sophisticated hormonal interplay during pregnancy and postpartum, resulting in the production of nutrient-rich breast milk perfectly tailored to the needs of the baby. According to lactation experts, breast milk contains antibodies, hormones, and growth factors that adapt to the infant's development and health--something no chemical cocktail can replicate.

Men attempting to "chestfeed" typically rely on off-label use of drugs like domperidone, a medication not approved for inducing lactation and one that can have serious side effects for both the adult and the infant. Some studies have shown that milk produced through this method lacks the nutritional complexity of natural breast milk and can even contain unsafe levels of hormones and medications.

Dr. Jane Anderson, a pediatrician and lactation consultant, warns:

"We are seeing an experimental and ethically questionable practice unfolding. Infants deserve optimal nutrition, not an imitation that could potentially harm them."

International Debate Intensifies

The controversy surrounding chestfeeding isn't limited to La Leche League. Globally, similar debates have erupted in other maternal and child health organizations. For example:

Australia's Public Health Sector has faced pushback after guidelines were updated to encourage language like "lactating parent" instead of "mother," further blurring lines of biological reality. Many midwives and maternal care workers have raised concerns that the focus on inclusivity is coming at the expense of women-centered care.

In Canada, a trans-identified male was allowed to participate in a breastfeeding class, leaving several mothers uncomfortable voicing personal struggles. One participant anonymously stated, "It felt like a safe space for mothers had been taken over by someone who clearly wasn't going through what we were."

In the United States, Planned Parenthood and other organizations have begun promoting chestfeeding resources. Critics point out that these efforts are often driven by ideological, not medical, motivations.
Impact on Women's Spaces

Beyond the health risks, critics argue that chestfeeding policies undermine safe spaces for women. Breastfeeding support groups have historically offered camaraderie, shared experiences, and practical advice for mothers. The introduction of men, particularly those attempting to mimic female biological processes, disrupts this dynamic.

Miriam Main, who recently resigned as trustee and PR director for La Leche League in Britain, voiced her concerns:

"Breastfeeding groups should prioritize the well-being of babies and mothers. Allowing men to imitate a process designed by God and nature undermines both."

This erosion of women-centered spaces reflects a broader cultural trend where the distinctions between male and female are being erased.

The Biblical Foundation of Gender

For Christians, the issue is not only scientific but deeply theological. The Bible affirms the complementary roles and unique biological design of men and women. Genesis 1:27 declares, "Male and female He created them." This foundational truth underscores the distinct purposes God has woven into the fabric of human biology, including the incredible ability of women to bear and nourish life.

Modern attempts to rewrite this biological and spiritual reality lead to chaos and confusion. The practice of chestfeeding, which prioritizes adult desires over the needs of vulnerable infants, exemplifies the dangers of rejecting God's design.

A Call to Protect Mothers and Infants

The resignation of Marian Tompson and others is a courageous stand against what they see as an encroachment of harmful ideologies into spaces meant to support women and children. Their actions call for a return to biological and biblical truth, ensuring that the focus of organizations like La Leche League remains on providing safe, effective, and compassionate care for mothers and their babies.

As cultural debates rage on, Christians are reminded of their responsibility to advocate for the voiceless--whether it's the unborn or the newborn. This includes pushing back against practices that place ideology over biology, ensuring every child receives the care they deserve, and upholding the sanctity of God's design for men and women.
