They Thought She Was Beyond Hope. Jesus Had the Final Word.

Some people seem impossible to reach.

You pray for them. You talk with them. You love them. Yet nothing seems to change. Eventually, even people of faith begin to wonder whether hardened hearts will ever open to the gospel.

That was Mihret.

She lived in a simple mud hut in a rural, majority-Muslim village in Ethiopia, where the beliefs she had held all her life seemed immovable. Even a local Christian leader concluded, “This woman will probably never come to know Jesus. She seems too set in her beliefs.” But one person refused to accept that verdict—her son, Alem.

When Alem became a follower of Jesus, his family ridiculed him. They rejected the message of God’s grace, insisting, “That’s ridiculous. If God forgave sins, we wouldn’t need to pray five times a day.” To them, the gospel was simply too unbelievable to accept.

Their opposition soon became far more than words. Alem’s family declared him an apostate, forcibly took his wife away, and married her to his uncle. It was a devastating price to pay for following Christ, yet Alem refused to let bitterness replace faith. Instead, he continued loving the very people who had rejected him, trusting that God could accomplish what he never could on his own.

For five years, Alem faithfully shared audio recordings of Scripture with his mother in one of the Gurage languages—the language she understood most deeply. He did not try to win arguments. He simply made sure she could hear God’s Word again and again, trusting that when she heard Scripture in her heart language, God Himself would accomplish what no argument ever could.

Then came the moment no one expected.

After hearing about the Book of Life, Mihret asked, “I want my name to be written in the Book of Life. How can I make sure that happens?” That single question revealed a heart God had been quietly transforming. Through hearing Scripture in her own language, Mihret came to understand the gospel and placed her trust in Jesus Christ.

The woman everyone thought was beyond hope became living proof that no one is beyond the reach of God’s Word. Today, Alem rejoices knowing his mother’s name is written in the Book of Life and that she now shares the hope of eternal life through Jesus. Looking back, even the local leader who once doubted says simply, “This story has really rebuked me.”

Mihret reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s Word. Yet millions of people are still waiting to hear the gospel. And that is why Spoken Worldwide is committed to bringing Scripture to people in the language they understand best.

Because when someone truly hears God’s Word in their heart language, another family has the opportunity to experience what Alem and Mihret experienced. Another life can be transformed, opening the door for another “impossible” story to become an amazing testimony of God’s grace.

We can reach more people just like this, but we need the help of friends like you to do it. Would you prayerfully give to support this ministry today?

Your generosity will help more people hear God’s Word in a language they can truly understand, giving them the opportunity to respond to the gospel just as Mihret did.

Please give YOUR BEST GIFT—and help write the next impossible story.
